As General Manager at HandsOn Systems Italy, Gianni Genco is currently in charge of assisting various companies within the waste management sector to adopt the new national digital waste-tracking platform in Italy, called RENTRI (“Registro Elettronico Nazionale dei Rifiuti”).
Italy’s waste-management sector has long grappled with inefficiencies, document falsification, illicit transport and disposal of waste. These issues, combined with evolving European directives, led the Government to design a robust digital alternative. Legislative Decree No. 152 (3 April 2006) and subsequent amendments — notably the Ministerial Decree No. 59 of 4 April 2023 – provide the legal framework for RENTRI.
The system was rolled-out starting 15 June 2024 (focusing first on hazardous waste operators) and full implementation is staggered through to the end of 2026. Its primary ambition: enhance transparency of the waste lifecycle (generation – transport – disposal), streamline administrative duties, and curb illegal practices. Companies engaged in waste‐generation, processing, transport or disposal, both municipal and hazardous waste, are obliged to register with RENTRI here https://www.rentri.gov.it/it
At HandsOn Italia SRL, we view RENTRI as an enabling infrastructure — one that aligns closely with our telematics and digital-tracking solutions for the circular economy. By integrating GPS tracking and operational telematics into fleet and waste-transport workflows, our clients can not only comply with RENTRI’s mandates, but also gain added value in efficiency, routing, environmental performance and data transparency.
